Hempstead is a historic village in the NW corner of Essex, 7 miles East of Saffron Walden, 20 miles from Cambridge [via M11] and 50 miles from London [via M11].
The highwayman Dick Turpin was born in the village pub "The Bluebell Inn" in 1705. William Harvey, the man who discovered the circulation of blood in the human body, and Sir Eliab Harvey, a Commander at the Battle of Trafalgar, are buried in the crypt at Hempstead Church.

From A14/M11 Southbound: From the A14 take the M11 southbound and leave at junction 10. At roundabout take 1st exit onto the A505 (signposted Saffron Walden). Follow signs for A1301 (Saffron Walden) then B184 (Saffron Walden then Thaxted), then B1054 (for Bumpstead, Haverhill) which will take you to the High Street, Hempstead.
